The cabinet installers are putting the drawer pulls on my kitchen cabinets today. I have to choose the placement of the handles. These are the two options I will select from:

Kinja'd!!!

The one on the left has the pulls centered on each drawer. The one on the right has the pulls centered on the top drawer, and then the larger drawers have the pulls spaced the same distance from the top as the first drawer. The benefit of the first is symmetry, the benefit of the second is that the handles on the bottom drawer will be easier to reach. What say you? I will be reading your replies, but probably won’t have time to answer.

Thanks!

Function over fashion. Besides, logic has it’s own beauty. The ones on the right.

Right looks more modern. Left looks more traditional.

The right configuration. That way, the drawers are always suspicious

The one on the right. As long as it’s consistent, you won’t notice the lack of symmetry.

Right side for sure. Easier to reach and much more modern looking. One on the left reminds me of a dresser I had when I was 13.

Depends on the hight of the cabinet. If its a base (floor) cabinet the handles should towards the top of the drawer. For uppers I like them at the bottom of the drawer. In the middle if I find awkward.

Base cabinets.

A third option is to set the handles at the 1/3 point of each drawer. That avoids the awkwardness of the look of the right and lets in a lot of its functional advantage - with less of a difference in space over the handle between the two sizes, so it’s less jarring than the left.

This probably doesn’t help. We went with centered. But then, the details on the doors kinda would have made it look weird to have the pulls favoring one side.... I think so anyway.

Kinja'd!!!0

From a purely design standpoint, a lot of it would depend on the cabinent/drawer style, the design of the pulls, and the overall style of your kitchen.

If they are all just flat with no edge detailing or profiles, that would generally lend to a more modern design, so the right side example would work. Having them centered is certainly more traditional. I live in a 104 year old house, so this is part of the execution of the kitchen I designed and had built.

Kinja'd!!!0

The irony of my username, and disagreeing with your choice here, is really... something.

I do think it depends on the door design. Plain fronts - it wouldn’t look funny. But with my door design with the trim or whatever, I think it would have been weird not to be centered vertically.

Kinja'd!!!1

Still disagree. Since you’ll be looking down at them all the time, the distance you’ll notice most will be from door top to the handle. Besides the effects of perspective and the fact that you’ll see a foreshortened view of the area below the handle anyway.

And last, it’s going to be easier to use.

Thankfully, my wife and I don’t sweat these kinds of decisions. We got through this project fine despite some dire warnings from friends who said it was hell trying to make 1 million decisions all the time. When it comes to, “both ways are good, you just have to decide” we just look at each other and whichever has a stronger opinion wins. Don’t sweat the small stuff (it’s all small stuff).

It helps that my father in law is a kitchen designer. Whenever we couldn’t decide we’d just ask him.

Kinja'd!!! DynamicWeight > ttyymmnn
11/02/2016 at 15:29

Kinja'd!!!0

I vote right. They’re easier. Plus, having them centered looks dumb. Small dissonance like having them being slightly offset from the exact center of the drawer makes having them centered side to side much more pleasing. Especially in contrast to the top drawers being perfectly centered. Otherwise it’s boring.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > DynamicWeight
11/02/2016 at 15:41

Kinja'd!!!0

I agree on all counts. The drawers are slab-front. If they were shaker, like the cabinet doors, then centering would be the only option. Symmetry is great, but a little bit of asymmetry makes things interesting. We have chosen option 2.
